Everything about Funnel Web Spider Anti-Venom
Funnel web spiders are highly dangerous and aggressive spiders whose
bites are extremely poisonous and life threatening. The anti venom
perfected to combat funnel web spider poison is the only hope in case of
a bite. The unique anti venom is made by immunizing rabbits against the
poison and collecting a part of their blood, which neutralizes the
poison. The blood is then processed and made into an injection suitable
for human usage.
Funnel Web Spider antivenom was originally developed to treat cases of
bites by the Sydney funnel web spider, but has proved effective in bites
by a variety of other species of funnel web spiders as well. Each vial
contains 125 units of antivenom as a dried powder and it is dissolved in
water before it can be used. The injection also holds traces of glycine
and other substances.
The usage of anti-venom
Funnel web spider venom contains a protein toxin called Robustoxin,
which is responsible for devastating stimulation of the human nervous
system. Some victims become so ill after being bitten by the web spiders
that sometimes an immediate application of anti-venom is the only
lifesaver, acting quickly to help reverse the effect of poison. As there
are sometimes unpleasant and dangerous reactions to the anti venom, it
should not be given to people who only have mild effects from the bite.
Tell the doctor about your existing diseases
Before taking a Funnel Web-Spider Anti-venom, it is necessary to tell
the doctor regarding your existing weaknesses and diseases. If you are
asthmatic or if you suffer from any other allergies or hay fever, your
treatment would differ. Pregnant women or those who are in the process
of breast-feeding should also disclose their body state to the doctor
before taking the antivenom. The dosage for both adults and children is
two vials (125 units X 2 vials= 250 units) injected into a vein.
Funnel Web Spider Anti venom should only be given if there is clear
evidence of poisoning. The use of adrenaline as pre-treatment when using
anti venoms is still being debated. The risk of anaphylaxis varies from
anti venom to anti venom. It is recommended that the Product Information
be read before use and if necessary contact be made with a specialist in
the field.
What to do if you face any untoward reaction to the Anti venom
If you experience any sudden fall in the blood pressure or bronchospasm,
after the antivenom injection, then it is prescribed to stop the anti
venom and give adrenaline by subcutaneous injection. Once the untoward
anti venom reaction is controlled, cautiously restart anti venom
infusion. However, if Bronchospasm is the major problem, you doctor can
try nebulised adrenaline to add greater relief.
