How to Deal With a Funnel -Web Spider Bite

Research shows that male funnel web spiders are more poisonous than the females. It is best to avoid and maintain distance with this species of spiders. They are extremely hostile and equally dangerous, regardless of their size and class. The poison that they inject into the body of its victim is highly venomous and starts its action within moments of the bite.

The Funnel-web spiders are mostly found in areas near the south-eastern part of Australia and Sydney. They are even found in United States but more popular as exotic pets.

These spiders’ bite contains atraxtoxin, a dangerous and powerful form of neurotoxin, which when injected into the body, burns down the tissues and ligaments of that portion and even causes muscle twitch and numbness while entering into the blood vessels. In a serious situation, the patient can suffer from cerebral, a damaged limb, edema coma, shock and even death in case of small children. Do not forget to tie a strap tightly around the bite area to prevent the poison from getting the chance to circulate into the whole body.

Indications of the effect of the poison

Although they might appear, small but their bites are incredibly strong and painful. Within 10 to 15 minutes of the bite, the indications are clearly visible in the victim. The immediate indications of a Funnel-Web Spider bite in humans is excessive sweating, difficulty in gulping down, heavy eyelids, problem with proper sightings, problem in breathing, stinging pain in the joints and muscles, mouth area and lips getting numb. If left untreated for a few hours, the victim would experience high blood pressure with extreme vomiting and rise in heart beat, nausea and may even fall in coma.

Measures to be taken

If you want to survive, you must immediately apply some basic first aid on the wound and tie a strap tightly around the bite to stop the venom from spreading within the body. You should immediately contact the nearest hospital for your treatment. If you are experimenting with Funnel Web spiders or knowingly visiting Funnel Web Spider infested areas then you should always carry the right anti venom and necessary equipments to inject the anti venom.

The most important thing to do is to stop panicking and not to move the bitten area. If you panic then your heart starts beating faster and starts circulating more blood, which spreads the poison throughout your body.

Also, please make a note of some vital information like the weight of the patient, age, time of the bite, if possible identity of the spider before you call for help.
